Taking Photographs Underwater: Equipment, Tips and Examples

Waterproof camera cases

From your local swimming pool to snorkelling in the sea, you can take some great photos underwater, and it doesn’t need to cost a lot, thanks to the many different waterproof camera housings available for both dslr’s and compacts.

If you don’t fancy taking your trusty digital camera underwater in a waterproof housing, then you could try the ”single use” marine cameras; ideal for taking on holiday and simple to use.

A few facts and tips:

1) Water absorbs colour such as red, orange and yellow, which is why underwater photographs appear blue.

2) The deeper you go the more colour is absorbed. By using a flash or strobe, more colour can be added.

3) Get in close to your subject. Water not only reduces colour but contrast and sharpness too.

4) Get down to eye level, or below your subject, instead of  shooting from above.

5) Use your cameras macro mode when shooting close-in.

Now take a look at these great underwater shots taken from                                       the creative commons.
